Richmond Favorites

Want the inside scoop on the top activities and destinations around Richmond's lively social scene? Thousands of Richmond Magazine's readers sent in their votes for the 34th annual Best & Worst survey, highlighting some of the area's top options. Our real estate agents know there's a lot to love about living in Central Virginia, too. Below are some of the favorites mentioned in the survey by Richmond Magazine.

  • Virginia Museum of Fine Arts - 200 N. Arthur Ashe Blvd., Richmond, VA 23220
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is such an iconic part of Richmond that it ranked at or near the top in several categories. People voted VMFA as "Best place for a first date" and "Best nonprofit art gallery or museum" as well as #3 in "Best place to take a first-time visitor," "Best place to picnic," and "Best place to people-watch." Admission is free for all guests, making it accessible to everyone. Hours are 10 a..m - 5 p.m. daily except Wednesday through Saturday, when doors are open until 9 p.m.

  • Deep Run Park - 9900 Ridgefield Pkwy., Henrico, VA 23233
A wide-ranging assortment of passive and active recreation opportunities earned Deep Run Park the top spot of  "Best county park." Cycling enthusiasts near Henrico homes for sale are "pumped" about the latest addition to Deep Run Park's attractions. The new pump track features a never-ending loop of rollers and berms that let cyclists propel themselves by shifting their weight instead of pedaling. Enjoy basketball, pickleball, and other team and partner sports at the onsite recreation center. Park hours are dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

  • Lillie Pearl - 416 E. Grace St., Richmond, VA 23219
When a restaurant opens in the midst of a pandemic, it faces an uphill climb. Lillie Pearl, which debuted in November 2020, rapidly gained a following thanks to its fusion of Southern classics and African flavors. The signature dish at this year's "Best new restaurant" is Obe Ata Braised Lamb Shank, topped with West African tomato and bell pepper sauce and served with jollof rice and pickled collard stems. Owners Michael Lindsey and Kimberly Love-Lindsey plan to spin off their popular fried chicken into a spot at Hatch Food Hall. Lillie Pearl is open 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday.

  • River City Roll - 939 Myers St., Richmond, VA 23230
River City Roll may have been voted "Best bowling alley," but it's much more than that. "Richmond's social spot" is one of only eight facilities in the world to offer HyperBowling, in which lighted targets on the bumpers add multipliers to your score. The live music schedule includes weekly "Brunch Unplugged" on Sunday. Relax on the pet-friendly patio as you dine on upscale fare such as truffle fries and spicy lamb meatballs. Hours are 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 5 p.m. - midnight Friday, noon-midnight Saturday, and noon - 9 p.m. Sunday. River City Roll is 21 and up after 7 p.m.

  • The Fan District - 208 Strawberry St., Richmond, VA 23220
Named for the unusual layout of its streets, the Fan District was recognized as the "Best neighborhood in the city of Richmond." Spend an afternoon strolling the streets and view the collection of spectacular homes built in a variety of architectural styles. Houses for the Holiday Tour, scheduled for December 11 and 12, is one of the most popular local fundraising events.
